This may not be helping you, but since you're stuck,
try using kwifimanger. I had a hard time beating my wifi card into
submission at one point nd I recall hearing nothing but praise for this
app. You still should go back once you've got nm-applet reinstalled, but
this might work and get you up while you trouble shoot. Also, it tells you
whether the card is working or not, or whether the problem is with the
software config.
