I have to agree with Bart - while there are advantages to having a domain
controller, and it could as easily (or more) be a Linux/Samba server as
Windows, that won't resolve the problem of your machines communicating.

Putting in practically any cheap router to handle DNS/DHCP would resolve
that issue.
