Kept back means that that package has a dependency which is not
available in the repository. Whether that dependency is a newer
version, or something altogether that is not available in the
repository.
If you do a 'sudo apt-cache show gxine', you get the following for
dependencies, recommends, and suggests.
Depends: libc6 (>= 2.4), libdbus-1-3 (>= 1.1.1), libdbus-glib-1-2 (>=
0.74), libglib2.0-0 (>= 2.12.0), libgtk2.0-0 (>= 2.12.0), libhal1 (>=
0.5.8.1), liblircclient0, libmozjs0d (>= 1.8.1.5), libpango1.0-0 (>=
1.20.1), librsvg2-common, libx11-6, libxcb1, libxext6, libxine1 (>=
1.1.8), libxine1-x | libxine1 (<< 1.1.8-2), libxinerama1
Recommends: libxine1-ffmpeg
Suggests: gxineplugin, libdvdcss2 | libdvdcss, libgnomevfs2-0,
realplayer
You can try 'apt-cache unmet | grep gxine' which should show you the
unmet dependency.
You might have to install that dependency separately (downloading and
compiling yourself), or you might just not have the right repositories
enabled.
