Here are my numbers, Linux-only desktop machine with quite a lot of
applications installed, Xubuntu, lighter weigh desktop than Gnome or
KDE, but still sunstantial. No servers, but several programming
languages, lots of docs, many music files, ...

8.04 on a 250 gig SATA disk. I used 10 gigs each for / and /var, 20
for /usr, rest /home. If I were re-doing it, I'd make / smaller.

Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda1 10325748 480884 9320344 5% /
/dev/sda2 20641788 4821280 14771868 25% /usr
/dev/sda5 8262036 1881260 5961080 24% /var
/dev/sda6 189644412 89716372 90294668 50% /home

My Xterminal -- Xubuntu, every font I could find and Firefox, but
nothing else -- has only an 8 gig flash drive. Whole install is about
1.5 gigs. I'm sure I could pare it further, but have not bothered.
