installer doesn't see existing partitions

   you were right: the Fedora cd told me:

     invalid partition table - recursive partition on /tmp/hda

   which is  clearly more informative than the Ubuntu absence of message!
   Anyway, I was unable to find what does that mean, and hovw it
   happened.
   I tried to re-partion with PartitionMagic, but it crashed,
   and I was left with a broken disk. So, i did a fresh install.
