That's the Notification Area applet.  You can give this a try:

Right click the panel & then "Add to Panel". Scroll down to 'Utilities'
and see if there is a Notification Area applet. If so add it back. If not:


sudo apt-get install --reinstall gnome-applets gnome-applets-data
