is java installed correctly? firefox says "nope"

This is one of my biggest pain points with Linux.  We have some
java-based control panels on servers and network devices and Firefox
on Linux invariably fails to load some of them, in spite of having the
java plugin installed.  I thought Java was supposed to be
platform-independent!
