Have you tried to reconfigure the xserver-xorg package? You can do this
by typing "sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg"
This will lead you through a series of dialogs (the default options are
in almost all cases OK) after which you should have an working x.
If that doesn't work try:
"sudo nvidia-xconfig enable"
This will attempt to guess a working xorg.conf. It has a lot of options
you may want to fiddle with. I can't give you any advice on which
options to choose, as I don't know your configuration.

This is about as far as my knowledge goes, hope you'll get it working.
