This is IMHO and other people might see it different!

For me there is no differences in installing KDE on a (GNOME) Ubuntu
system. Or installing GNOME on a (KDE) Kubuntu System. You can
configure both systems to behave the same way. (By using
update-alternatives.) You can even change a Ubutu server installatiob
to a Kubuntu/Xubuntu and so on system. And vice versa. You only need
to know which packages you need to install or deinstall. (Freedom of
choice ;-).)

Besides the kde metapackage there is a gnome metapackage! You can use

apt-get install kde on a Ubuntu system
apt-get install gnome on a Kubuntu system

By the way both metapackages will install some more packages than you
get in the standard installation. It is one of my hobbies to track all
the nice small GNOME and KDE applications that are not installed on a
standard system ;-). GNOME and KDE have a lot of nice applications :-).

May be there is one difference: on a Ubuntu System the bootup splash
screen is orange and on a Kubuntu system the bootup splash screen is
blue ;-). But I am sure you can configure that too...

Hope this helps,
