yes it can. the only prob I've seen (and remember that I havent tried this since gutsy beta) was that the iso needs to be on a disk that WONT be mounted because it was already mounted grub, and makes the installer unable to add fstab entries for that partition.

Sorry forgot to email you the link. Just go to archives.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool and drop down until you find and Installer folder and then i386, and inside it a hdboot.
