WEP not possible on certain wiki adaptors?

A neighbor has installed Ubuntu on his desktop machine. He connects to
his wifi router with an Edimax rt73usb USB dongle. In Windows XP
Cracked Edition he connects to the router just fine, with WEP
encryption. However, in Ubuntu, he reports that he 'sees' the router,
but cannot connect with WEP. He says that he cannot configure the
router to not use encryption. I will go over this evening to look at
his setup, but I need to know what could the possible culprits be?

The last time I was over there, I got this kernel log:

It looks like the dongle it detected, no? What else should I check?
Thanks in advance.

A: Because it messes up the order in which people normally read text.
Q: Why is top-posting such a bad thing?
