live cd fails to boot

The live CD hangs with this (approximate, I had to write it down) error:

Buffer I/O error on device fd0, logged block 0

This is after pressing F6 for options and removing quiet and splash, then 
adding:

no apci acpi=off

before the "--" as options for the kernel (?).



>From another distro, I know that the hardware works fine and is 
recognized.  Is this a matter of recognizing hardware?
