External USB hard drive "loosing" connection [Maxtor onetouch]

Hi,
The suggestion of remounting the the drive worked for me (at least for past
2 days!).
Its probably not the most secure or ideal but it works for now. Here is what
I am doing.

38 01 * * *     root umount /var/backup; if mount /var/backup; then
/usr/sbin/sbackupd; fi
