I've just done the same with a fresh install (Alternate CD) to the
entire drive on my test machine; all went well until after it did the
online updates. Then I had the same problems. I ended up booting into
recover mode and let it reconfigure the xserver. This reminds me of the
Dapper to Edgy update problems.
