Thanks for the info. However, after adding

export LANG="sv_SE.UTF-8"
export LC_MESSAGES="en_US.UTF-8"

to ~/.profile and restarting X, I am still stuck with an all english locale. On
the other hand, after adding

LANG="sv_SE.UTF-8"
LC_MESSAGES="en_US.UTF-8"

to /etc/environment and restarting the comuter I get the desired result.
