I defined them on the command line in a gnome terminal session. (I.e.
alias dosomething='do something')


The aliases are permenenttly kept in the shell script (.bashrc, .cshrc etc).

I use bash (.bashrc) - to find out which one you are using do: ls *rc in yoyour home directory.

Once you have that you can edit the file to add the ones you want. The .bashrc script even indicates where to add them. It also optionally allows you to specify a file in which you may include your local aliases vs putting them in the startup script)
