I think gutsy has a bug that prevents high resolutions in the console
framebuffer. Actually, I know it had when it was released, and never tested
it again during the cycle to check if a correction has been slipped in a
security update (which is unlikely).
Matt, check if you have a vga= option enabled in your /boot/grub/menu.lst.
Better yet, do you see the grub menu, and the screen turns off after the
kernel initializes? If so, yoiu can edit the boot options and remove the vga=
setting just for that session.
