Unreadable menu on Xubuntu

I installed Xubuntu7.10 (Xfce)on relatively older Hardware (VIA 551MHz
CPU, Memory 128MB). Almost everything works fine. Firefox, Skype
(though sound breaks) works. But for certain applications, like xmms,
the menu is not readable.  I am unable to see text, I can see ctrl+L,
Shift+L, but what does it mean, that text is not there. How can I
solve it.
