Added points - from the Live CD:

1. To see if the drive mounts: click on Places|Computer and then the
drive if it shows up.
2. If the drive shows up: find a .doc file and double-click it and see
if OpenOffice opens the file.
3. If the drive shows up: you will be able to see what type
(ext2/3/ntfs) from gparted - System|Administration|Partition Editor
little box to the right to select the correct drive. Note: again *don't*
do or change anything yet, just report back what you find for that
drive. Tell us what filesystem it shows. Even if it is not mounted, you
should still be able to see the drive and type - it just won't show a
Mountpoint.
