OK Frank here is the problem.

title           Ubuntu Gutsy, kernel 2.6.22-15-generic
root            (hd0,2)
kernel          /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.22-15-generic root=/dev/sda3 ro
initrd          /boot/initrd.img-2.6.22-15-generic
quiet

# This entry automatically added by the Debian installer for an existing
# linux installation on /dev/sda2.
title Ubuntu 7.10, kernel 2.6.22-14-generic (recovery mode) (on
/dev/sda2)
root            (hd0,1)
kernel          /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.22-14-generic
root=UUID=95429e4c-cdde-480a-88ba-674fb6619838 ro single
initrd          /boot/initrd.img-2.6.22-14-generic
savedefault
boot

The top is your boot and it has no root=UUID= and this confuses the
system sending you a new kernel. I have not updated my Gutsy but will
today and expect zero problems.
