Have been watching this thread for a while.
Here is what I did & I have had no problems with M$ Windows or Ubuntu.
Formatted 350GiB hard drive into 3 partitions.
Drive C (1st partition of HD 0) Clean install of windows
Drive D (2nd partition of HD 0) used for misc. files & basically storage
Drive E (3rd partition of HD 0) Install of Ubuntu
In drive C of windows, I made a directory & placed 2 files in it.
The files are: ubuntu-8.04-desktop-i386.iso AND Wubi-8.04.exe
Executed Wubi-8.04.exe from that folder. When asked where to put Ubuntu, I chose Drive E
Now when I turn on my computer, I have the choice of M$ Windows or Ubuntu.
I have been using this set up on another machine as well with no problems for the past 2 months.
Machine #1 is a Compaq Presario, Intel Celeron 2.7 GhZ, 2 GiB ram, 350 GiB hard drive 0 with
3 partitions (C, D, E) set with cable select. The CD rom is a generic CD RW
Machine #2 is home rolled set up, basically the same.
I also have another machine, Dell Optiplex GX1 ... Set up the same, but using windows 98 &
a much smaller HD ... 3GiB
I too had problems at first until I put Ubuntu in it's own partition.
I am a noobee. If someone has a better way, "lay it on me".
Tnx
