I don't think so.   That's a big reason why staying inside the
repositories or making packages and using apt to install them is
really the way to go.  Backing out of source installs - especially big
systems like X - is quite difficult.  Backing out of changes made
using apt/Synaptic is easy.

There's no reason to think your home folder was mucked up though.
Back it up, reinstall and you're 90% back to where you were.
