something must have gone wrong with your display settings.
Do one thing, backup yor X configuration file :
$sudo /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.bak

Then run,
$sudo dpkg-reconfigure

Hopefully that should detect your Display settings correctly
