I have an athlon 64x2, and the 32 bit version of knoppix - the latest
one - faled to boot as well. And knoppix 64 seems to be a dead
project.

I run 64-bit here. Why virtually slice off 1/2 your processor? :)

At this point, the 32 bit software issues in 64-bit userland are easy
to cope with, IMHO.
