Yeah, that is why I clarified the specific vmware lib: to avoid a
misunderstanding that could result in him removing his system lib
(/lib/libgcc_s.so.1).

Sorry, I copied and pasted from the OP error message.
The actual (case specific) file as on my system was:
'/usr/lib/vmware/lib/libgcc_s.so.1/libgcc_s.so.1'
