Thunderbird/Lightning problem on Hardy

Don't send HTML email. Ever. To anyone. Especially not to mailing lists.

Try

$ sudo aptitude purge thunderbird
$ sudo aptitude install thunderbird

This will delete all of the configuration for Thunderbird, and might
fix your problem.
