Screen goes full screen black and cant access OS when playing video file, sometimes!

Hi,

I have an unsual problem.  Hardy 8.01 HP Compaq 6710b laptop with X3100
graphics accelerator (Intel 965GM)

This happens with VLC, Totel Player and VLC plugin for Firefox

Mostly when im in 1280x800 resolution, and i play a video, without even
asking it to go full screen, (like right now it happened on NASA TV
webpage), when the video starts playing it goes full screen BLUE or
black or white on my laptop.

The mouse disappears and i cant access anything, yet i hear the audio
coming out of the speakers.  Even when i do Ctrl-Alt-Backspace, the
audio stops but still nothing on screen or cant access anything, i have
to hold power to turn off the computer and reboot.

This doesnt happen in 1680x1050 resolution
