Unable to mount a usb "stick" in ubuntu 8.04

I also think that is either a bad filesystem or a bad USB.
Did you try to use fdisk or cfdisk to see if you can see the USB.  Try to
reformat the USB.  Don't forget to back up your data before doing this.
