Fonts in Ubuntu 8.04

Regarding your question:

/usr/share/fonts

is the directory for system-wide fonts. You can add or remove fonts there.

~/.fonts

is the fonts directory specific to the user. You will need to add this
directory manually either via Nautilus (file browser) or terminal (mkdir
~/.fonts

When you add or remove a font manually, it is always a good idea to
update your fonts cache - from a terminal:

fc-cache -v -f
