I'd be willing to bet that if you open a terminal and run:
top -d1
you'll find that it is Tracker doing its indexing. You can either
uninstall Tracker, or turn off indexing: System|Preferences|Search and
Indexing|Indexing Options and then untick "Enable Indexing" etc. You can
also adjust performance etc., if you want to keep indexing on.
