what was the trouble you had yet through it ? it is massively helpful if
you have more than one ubuntu machine in your network ...

i.e. through the 169.x.x.x ip you automatically have a name service up
and running try pinging <nameofyourmachine>.local in your network ...
this works from any avahi capable system to another. it comes in very
handy to not have to maintain /etc/hosts on all machines or a dns server
in a small network ...

beyond that, if you use rhythmbox, you might notice it is able to play
form every other rhythmbox ressource in the local network if you allow
it to (have a look at the daap plugin in rhythmbox to enable it).

there are tons of other usecases and more and more apps of the desktop
start to integrate with avhi for easier use experience in netwoks.

i'd really be intrested to hear about concrete problems that anyone had
through having avahi up and running in the background if there are any,
please report them and they can be fixed :)

oh, and beyond all that we tend to use the collaborative gobby editor at
the ubuntu conferences to collaboratively write the specifications of a
new release, without avahi that would be much more painful to do and
ubuntu development would be a lot slower (indeed i'm kidding, but there
surely is a grain of truth in the above, its simply supposed to make all
our lives easier) ;)
