Check to see if there is a method (there should be) to permit console
login. Upon selecting that, you should be dropped to a text console,
make sure you can login with your name and password. If that doesn't
work, try recovery mode, or another live cd that lets you into an
environment where you can mount your current root partition, and do
things like reset the password - if indeed the password is something
that needs fixing.
If you can get in via "the back door" you can stop gdm/kdm and do a
regular startx to get into x, or troubleshoot the x part if that's
something that needs to be done.
