Forgive me for jumping in the thread here,, it's just too convoluted for
me to find an appropriate message to reply to.

Also, forgive me for even replying to this thread at all.. I know it's
like 3 day old fish, and if I were to sleep on it, I would convince
myself to let it die (as if it would be that easy.)

Where does the idea that this list is hostile to noobs come from. I've
been a lurker to this list for over a year, (sometimes even
contributing)... I've seen lots and lots of very noob questions. (I
mean, even questions by people who have no idea what a terminal is or
what to with it. (Ok, that might not be the best example, and obviously
my perspective is a little skewed, but I think my point stands.)

In all cases, people were always offered courteous help.. Never have I
seen RTFM answers on this list that were not accompanied with pointers
on how to find TFM. (Are you honestly going to debate that being pointed
to the appropriate documentation is not proper assistance?) I've seen
lots of people bend backwards to help on this list. Keep in mind that
those who are qualified to answer very technical questions are probably
taking time away from their very well paid contract rates to do so.

The only people who get treated rudely here by the 'experts' are those
who were rude and disrespectful to the aforementioned help. (The
initiator of this thread comes to mind.) They get treated rudely in
kind, and I would not have it any other way.

And for the person who believes acronyms should not be used because they
are a burden to the uninitiated... if they aren't used, how would anyone
ever learn them? Are you suggesting that society as a whole should
abandon them entirely? It doesn't matter what field of endeavor a
person undertakes, when you join a discussion on a subject, you have to
expect to learn the terminology of that subject. Again, no one has been
hurt or attacked for asking what RTFM means. The worst that happens is
someone answerers without using a polite euphemism.
