you are not the only one with that problem.
In case you use a wireless PCI card, I guess that your problem is this:

A work-around is to back-port by installing:
linux-backports-modules-2.6.24-17-generic
or what ever the newest is.

I actually only had
linux-backports-modules-2.6.24-16-generic

So one could do:
sudo apt-get install inux-backports-modules-2.6.24-16-generic
