I have a Gmail, Yahoo, the one I answered this with, and four other addresses.
What I use for all is Kmail. It downloads from all those servers
automatically but I DO wish Kmail would pick the email address people wrote
to me with as the from address as I always seem to forget to change my
address (like for instance this maillist, if I answer it from my default, I
get a complaint about not being able to deliver my email as I am not
subscribed. I then have to change my from address to the address subscribed
and resend. just a minor annoyance I know but one which takes extra time!)
I have never used a web based mailer all the way back to my C=64 days. Until
recently, all messages were answered offline as I had dial-up. They were
then batch mailed whenever I went online, ...about once a day.
