update manager error

Hi all!

Could someone tell me what happened here and how I can fix this?

I was able to open the archive and it looks like normal text, but I have
no real idea of how this works or where to look.  Yes, I am a horrible
newb to all this.  I did try google, but I am not getting the warm
fuzzies.  It sounds like I have a corruption that only a re-install will
fix.  OK, I can back everything up and do it, but then I am not learning
anything.
