System hangs after updating to Hardy

I had a similar problem a few weeks ago and none of the suggested 
remedies seemed to
help.   Judging from the large number of users who had similar problems, 
it could have been a flaw in the download.
So, I kept trying downloading from other sources and eventually got an 
8.04 DVD that so far seems to have given me a good 8.04 installation. 
Sorry, I didn't note which source this was.  It was a trial and error 
operation.
