Problems with changing wallpaper

I just had this problem recently which I am not entirely sure of how to resolve. When I go into System>Preferences>Appearance and proceed to change the wallpaper, I am unable to change it by clicking on the mouse.

But I am able to use the arrow buttons on my computer to change it. How do I solve this problem?

I am using Ubuntu 8.04
