OK Dave - I'm confused.  On one note you said gksu worked and on another
one you said it didn't.

Which is true?

I'm running out of ideas here - if you bail and re-install I'll understand.

If it were me, the next two things I'd do is
1 - re-install gksu, libgksu, nautilus-gksu  (just search for gksu in
Synaptic)  and retry

2 - create a new user (call him Fred or whatever :-) using the Users and
Groups tool in the System -> Administration menu.   Make sure to check
all the boxes on the second tab of the user profile that allow him to
administer the system etc.      Then log in as Fred and see if he has
the same problems you do.
