I just finished deleting the CD version of 8.04 and reinstalling the CD
version of 7.10. No problem-----it works fine.
I also did a web search for 8.04 lockups and it seems that it's quite a
common problem.

It seems to me that if all the other ubuntus that I've used in the past
all worked
perfectly on this computer and now 8.04 has this quirky lockup on the
same computer, the chances that there's something wrong with the
computer are slim, especially now that I've deleted the CD version of
8.04 and replaced it with a 7.10 version that worked perfectly before I
installed 8.04 and again when I replaced 8.04 with my old 7.10. The DVD
version of 8.04 has exactly the same kind of lockup as the CD version.
Perhaps all 8.04's aren't exactly the same depending on where they came
from.
In the past, I had as many as 7 different Linux systems installed
simultaneously and never had such a lockup problem.
A pox on ubuntu 8.04! Well, maybe I'll try downloading from a different
source.
