8.04 randomly locks up.

Have you tried ctrl+alt+backspace to restart X? Did that have any effect?

Try ctrl+alt+F[1-6] to a text tty and running top to see if it's something consuming loads of resources.


Some details on what's in the box wouldn't go amiss.
