Well, it looks as if Steve was right all along (stand up and take a bow
Steve:-).

I reburned the DVD at 2x and it now boots up and runs on the Thinkpad...
at 800Mhz/256MB it's like watching paint dry, but it _does_ manage to
get all the way through to the standard liveCD bits. The standard LiveCD
loads & runs considerably faster than the DVD (watching paint dry with a
fan), perhaps it's the nature of the DVD.

@Jerry: try as Steve has been suggesting all along; reburn at slower
speeds. At 4x I had I/O buffer errors and eventually ended up at a
standard gdm login screen requiring UID/PW, at 2x it made it through to
the normal liveCD.
I think the UID/PW issue is a fluke; meaning that somehow the DVD
drops into terminal mode during the error sessions and then somehow ends
up at the gdm login. Keep in mind that the DVD has all of the
libraries/files on it to run a gdm session etc., so something is causing
it to get to that mode. If I get a chance later I'll see if I can figure
out why.

Interestingly enough, at 1x I had I/O buffer errors just as I did with
4x. So you may have to burn a few coasters before you find the right
speed for your DVD reader on that particular machine. Note that all
three DVD's (1x, 2x, 4x) run just fine on my other desktop machine; not
so with the DVD drive on the Thinkpad.

[Added note: the "other" desktop machine is not the machine that I used
to burn the DVD's. I purposely used different machines so that I could
test the readers.]

So, it could very well be that the DVD/CD's that you received from
Ubuntu were burned at a speed that your DVD/CD reader doesn't like -
same as the one on my Thinkpad.
