Unable to use Ubuntu 8.04 live CD

Just a shot in the dark, but can you try the CTRL-ALT-F# combos at the
PW prompt or during boot?  CTRL-ALT-F1, etc - particularly CTRL-ALT-F1
or CTRL-ALT-F8 might display some useful messages.  I'd try them in
order - CTRL-ALT-F1, CTRL-ALT_F2, CTRL-ALT-F3 - down the line during
boot and see if anything shows up.  I don't remember exactly which VTs
are the most useful when booting from the live CD- maybe someone else
can fill you in...
