Firefox locking up

I downloaded the standalone bin for amd64 but haven't tried installing
it yet. I would prefer installing something from the repositories.
I'm also concerned about possible conflicts in the packages I've
already installed that could prevent firefox (even after reloading) to
report Java not working on Sun's test site, even though Enable Java is
checked.
Perhaps I should back out the existing java stuff I installed and go
with this file?
