That still sounds like a broken drive. I have drives that the CD side
goes out and drives that the DVD side goes out. I don't know if they
use different lasers inside, or just different chips, but it is
possible to have just part of the combo drive break.
The only fix I found is replace it. I have one sitting here now that is
dvd/cd with the dvd side dead.
