apt-get system reinstallation

Just to clarify (I appreciate all the advice and information), the 
original task I wanted to do was see if there were corrupted programs 
installed and if something wasn't working properly, reinstall it.

There doesn't appear to be many ways to fully verify that your system 
isn't corrupted without already having a checksum system in place 
beforehand (and maintained, since I don't know of any that are tied to 
the apt system to know that yes, I updated this file, so it won't match 
this time around).
