I already tried right-click. It gave me nothing about preferences. I
tried it again just now. Same result. When I right-click the 80.0 GB
Media icon, I get a menu that offers "Open," "Open in New Window,"
"Remove," "Rename," and "Unmount." "Remove" and "Rename" are greyed out.
If I unmount and right-click again, my options are the same.
And yes, Nautilus presents me with a "root file manager" window.

I have lost track of what you have running! It sounds like some kind
of Linux is running as root! When you log into your Linux do you login
as root? I login as a user like 99% of others do.
So please give us a lot more info on your system(s).

It seems you rightclicked the shortcut to the drive in the Nautilus
sidebar.
However, what you need to do is to navigate to File System (also in the
sidebar), and from there to /media. There you will find the directory in
which the disk is mounted. Now rightclick it, go to Properties at the
bottom, then to the tab Permissions.

On my laptop (Intel something soundcard), I had to double-click the
volume slider (in Gnome), and select edit->preferences. On that
screen, I had to make "front" visible and increase the volume. He may
try checking them all at once or one by one and then increasing the
volume on each slider.
'alsamixer' in a terminal will also show these "hidden" channels.

I am attempting to learn to use command line.
this check that universe mirror is listed in your /etc/apt/sources.list.
was my first challenge???
but I tried a command line anyway for VLC media player and I guess before accepting it my password was needed as it asked for it.
However it would take no typing at all so did a little research and thought maybe I needed to log in as super user.
Ok so I am confused. Would someone take my hand and lead me through this command line for the VLC or just the 101 of command line

When typing in passwords in the command line, the cursor does not move
because it is hiding your password from anyone peering over your shoulder.
This is similar to GUI interface that puts ***** when typing passwords.
Just type your password and press enter and you shoudl be good to go!

Hello, I've installed 8.04 desktop version in a intel xeon 2.5 GHz 8 cores server with 8GB of RAM but ubuntu does not recognize all memory, but only 2.5GB...
What should I do to solve this problem?

What command was that you tried exactly? Was it a command to install VLC?
like, apt-get install vlc ?
Presumably, since you got the password prompt, then you already tried it
with sudo (sudo is what tells the system to execute the command with
Super user permission, and requires password)
ex: sudo apt-get install vlc
Then it should prompt you for password. go ahead and type your
password, press Enter. Nothing will show on the screen, but that
doesn't mean it's not working. It only means that on-lookers and other
snoops can't see a password being typed in, nor can they count the *'s
to know the length of the password.
If you have the password right, apt-get will go ahead and try to install
whatever you were installing.
If the password is wrong, you'll get a "sorry, Try again" and need to
put your password in again.
