Just tagging on as someone else who's been unable to find a solution.
Everything else on the laptop works great, just for the life of me
can't figure out what's wrong with the mic port. It works under Windows.

Don't know if it ever worked under previous versions of Ubuntu as I
never tried to use it.

Gateway MP8708 laptop.
