I was testing out AD authentication on Ubuntu desktop (Hardy) a while
ago, and Likewise-Open in the repo worked nicely.

webmaster at chi-webuntu01:~$ apt-cache search ^likewise
likewise-open - Authentication services for Active Directory Domains
likewise-open-gui - GUI for Likewise Open Authentication service. Likewise Open

They do have a commercial version as well.
