unattended-upgr and apt

unattended-upgr and apt frequently show up in "ps -A", which I'm looking
at because my GNOME System Monitor will show inexplicable network usage.

Killing these processes is a pain in the neck, but certainly correlates
with the network usage going back to normal. However, as I speak it's
climbing again.

I don't think I'm hacked and someones using me as a bot, but I think it's
weird.

I've run netstat and installed some similar programs but can't get them
working -- but haven't read the manual on them, either.

It's gotta be a setting of some sort?

thanks,

thufir
